Active sentence

1. Concept of active sentences

Active sentence is a type of sentence in which the subject of the sentence is a person or thing that performs an action on its own, causing an impact on another person or thing. In other words, an active sentence is a sentence in which the subject plays the active/subject role.

Recipe:

S (subject) + V (verb) + O (object)

For example:

  • Nam did his homework yesterday

  • She bought a book

We see that the subjects mentioned in these two sentences are Nam and "she", this subject itself can do "doing homework" and "buy a book". So we use active voice for these two sentences

2. Characteristics of active sentences

According to the order in the sentence, the subject will come before the verb.

For example:  

  • Corinne makes pancakes every Sunday.

The subject is Corinne. The verb is “makes“. Corinnestand before makes.

If you imagine an arrow linking the subject to the verb, active sentences will always have the arrow pointing to the right.

For example: 

  • Lexi > mows

  • Corinne > makes

3. How to write active sentences

Subject + tense verb + object/complement.

For example:

  • Yesterday, Grandpa arrived at our house.

+ Subject: Grandfather

+ Verbs conjugated according to the past tense of the sentence: arrived

+ Complement: at our house
